Istighfaar means to pray to Allah that he may protect the supplicant from worldly desires, both in this world and the hereafter. Astaghfirullah literally translates to "I seek forgiveness in God "

Linguistic meaning:

  • Derived from the root (ghafara) which means :
  • To cover, to conceal or to forgive.
  • The word Astaghfirullah means 
  • " I seek forgiveness from Allah."

Islamic meaning:

In Islamic context, Istighfaar refers to
Asking Allah sincerely to forgive one's sins, protect from their consequences and to cover one's faults in this life and the hereafter.

Benefits of Istighfaar:

1.Forgiveness of Sin:

Istighfaar erases sins, whether big or small when done sincerely 

Quran:

"And seek forgiveness of your lord and repent to him. Indeed, my lord is merciful And Affectionate."

This story highlights the incredible power of Istighfaar, or seeking forgiveness Allah from Allah. It comes from the life of Imam Ahmed Bin Hanbali, a renowned Islamic scholars who also founded the Hanbali school of fiqh.
One day, in his old age, Imam Ahmed Bin Hanbal was travelling and stopped by a town where he did not know anyone. After the Isha prayers, he wanted to stay in the Masjid yard for the night, but the caretaker of the mosque did not recognize him and refused to let him stay. The caretaker even had to drag him out of the mosque. Luckily a nearby baker saw what was happening and felt pity for Imam Ahmed. He offered to host him for the night. We should note that not even the Baker knew the identity of the Imam.
During his stay with the Baker, Imam Ahmed observed that the baker was constantly reciting Istighfaar ( by saying " Astaghfirullah" ) seeking forgiveness from Allah. Imam Ahmed was intrigued by This and asked the Baker if he had observed any benefits from it. The Baker replied that, with the exception of one dua, Allah had always responded to all his supplications.
When Imam Ahmed asked the Baker about the Dua that had not yet been accepted, the Baker explained that he had been asking Allah to help him meet the great scholar, Imam Ahmed Bin Hanbal. Despite Allah fulfilling all of his other Duas, this one had not yet been granted.
This anecdote had a profound impact on Imam Ahmed, who was taken aback by the bakers response and the power of Istighfaar. He replied excitedly that Allah has indeed listened to the bakers Dua and had brought him, Imam Ahmed right to baker's door step.
This story serves as a powerful reminder of the incredible benefits of saying Istighfaar, and the amazing blessings that come from constantly asking Allah for his forgiveness.

  • Astaghfirullah also helps us to refrain from all forms of sins. Regularly saying this reminds us that Allah is everywhere and in this way there is very small changes of doing wrongful actions.
  • Ibn Abbas ( May Allah be pleased with them ) said: The Messenger of Allah ( peace be upon him) said, "If anyone constantly seeks pardon ( from Allah), Allah will appoint for him a way out of every distress and a relief from every anxiety, and will provide sustenance for him from where he excepts not "
  • In another Hadith, Abdullah bin Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) narrates that Muhammad SAW said:
  • " The one who says Istighfaar, that is, frequently repent to Allah for sins committed, Allah Azza wa -Jal will open a path from poverty and difficulties. Allah sorrow and hardship will be removed, and in it's place prosperity and contentment granted. One will receive sustenance from unimagined and unexpected sources."
  • Muhammad SAW said in another Hadith:
  • " The one who seeks forgiveness for Muslim males and females from Allah SWT will count that person among those who Dua is accepted, and thought the Barakah of whom those o earth gain Rizk.
  • Do Tasbih of Astaghfar at least 100 times daily as it is Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad SAW.
  • In one minute, you can say " Astaghfir Allah" more than 100 times! The virtue of seeking forgiveness is well- known, is is a reason of obtaining forgiveness, entering Paradise, having goof provisions, increasing one's strength, repelling harm, having affairs facilitated, the decent if rain, and increasing in wealth and children.

Verses about Astaghfar :

The word Astaghfar means seeking forgiveness from Allah. In Quran there are several verses that encourage or quote Prophet making Istighfaar (seeking forgiveness) 

1. Surah Al- Baqarah:

" And ask forgiveness of Allah, Indeed Allah is forgiving and Merciful".

2. Surah Al- Imran:

"And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins, and who can forgive sins except Allah?".

3. Surah Hud

" And ask forgiveness of your Lord and repent to him, he will let you enjoy a good provision for a specified term."

4. Surah Al- Tahrim:

"O you who have believed, repent to Allah with sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord will remove from you your misdeeds."

5. Protection from Punishment:

" But Allah would not punish them while you are among them, and Allah would not punish them while they seek forgiveness."
Constant Istighfaar seeking protects a society or individual from Allah's punishment.
