Types of " Worship" in Islam:

The main types of worship in Islam include the five pillars- faith( shahada) , prayer( Salah), charity (Zakat), fasting ( sawm) and pilgrimage ( Hajj). In addition to these, worship encompasses other obligatory and voluntary acts such as reciting the Quran Kareem earning  a living lawfully, and performing acta of kindness and righteousness.

Five pillars of Islam:

  • Shahada:  The declaration of faith, stating that there is no God but Allah SWT, and Muhammad is his Messenger.
  • Salah:  The five daily prayer performed at specific time. Involving physical movements and recitations.
  • Zakat: obligatory charity, typically 2.5% of one's savings, given to the poor and needy.
  • Sawm: Fasting during the month of Ramadan from dawn until sunset, which involves abstaining from food, drink, and other physical needs.
  • Hajj: The pilgrimage to Makkah, which is required of every Muslim who is physically and financially able to make the journey.

Other forms of worship:

  • Reciting the Quran Kareem: Reading and reflecting on the Quran Kareem.
  • zikr: Remembering and glorifying Allah SWT in all situations.
  • Seeking knowledge and social good: performing acta of charity, even small  ones like smiling at someone or helping a neighbor, are considered acts of worship
  • Repentance: Turning to Allah SWT for forgiveness after committing a sin is an essential act if worship.
  • Inner feelings and intentions: Cultivating feeling like love, fear and awe towards Allah SWT and having pure intentions behind one's actions, are also considered inner worship.

Islamic worship:

Here is a brief note on Islamic worship:

Islamic worship (ʿIbādah) refers to all acts done sincerely for Allah. It includes both formal rituals and everyday actions performed with good intentions. The main forms of worship in Islam are:
1. Shahādah (Faith Declaration):
Affirming belief in the oneness of Allah and that Muhammad (PBUH) is His messenger.
2. Ṣalāh (Prayer):
Muslims pray five times a day. It builds discipline, spiritual connection, and remembrance of God.
3. Ṣawm (Fasting in Ramadan):
Abstaining from food, drink, and sinful behaviour from dawn to sunset to develop self-control and empathy.
4. Zakāh (Charity):
Giving a portion of one’s wealth to the needy to purify wealth and support social welfare.
5. Ḥajj (Pilgrimage):
A once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage to Makkah for those who are able, symbolizing unity, equality, and devotion.

Beyond these, Islam teaches that good manners, honesty, helping others, and avoiding harm are also forms of worship when done for Allah’s sake. Worship in Islam is therefore both spiritual and practical, shaping a Muslim’s daily life.

Ways Muslims worship:

  • Prayer.
  • Zakat( charity).
  • Fasting.
  • Pilgrimage ( Hajj).

Islam worship:

Additionally, many mosques have a minaret, a tall tower from which the call to prayer, known as the Adhan is proclaimed. Prayer Lies at the heart of what happens inside a mosque. Muslims perform five daily prayers, known as Salah, and the mosque provided a dedicated space for these prayers.
Imam Al- Ghazali: in his book "al- Arba'in fi Usual al- Deen has enumerated ten forms which worship can take:
  1. Prayers.
  2. Prescribed alms-giving.
  3. Fasting
  4. Hajj or pilgrimage to Makkah.
  5. Reciting the holy Quran Kareem.
  6. Remembrance of Allah SWT
  7. Earning one's livelihood in accordance with the regulations of the Shariah.
  8. Fulfilling one's obligation towards one's companions and neighbors.
  9. Persuading people to act righteously and dissuading them from what is reprehensible and forbidden.
  10. To follow the Sunnah, or the practice of the Holy Prophet Muhammad SAW.
The concept of worship in Islam differs from that found in other religions, and is therefore subject to misunderstanding. In general worship, is understood to mean the observance of certain rituals, praying, fasting, giving charity and other good works. In Islam, Muslim scholars have said: worship is an all- inclusive term for those internal and external sayings and actions of a person that are pleasing to Allah SWT. In other words, worship is that what is done in obedience to Allah's will, which obviously includes rituals but goes far beyond to the realms of one's beliefs, social activities, and personal contributions to one's society and fellow human beings.
Islam looks at the individual as a whole. He is required to submit completely to Allah SWT, as the Quran Kareem instructed the Prophet Muhammad SAW to do: Say my prayer, my sacrifice, my life and my death belongs to Allah  SWT, he has no partner and I'm ordered to be among those who submit, i.e Muslims. The natural result of this submission is that one's activities should conform to the instructions of the one to whom the person is submitting Allah SWT. Islam requires that it's followers conduct every aspects of their lives according to it's teachings. This might sound strange to those who view religion as a personal relation between the individual and God and as having no impact on those activities that are not connected specifically with any religious rituals.
The Prophet Muhammad SAW taught his followers that Islam us far more than a private personal matter. Islam attaches no value to rituals, that are performed mechanically and have no influence on one's inner life. The Quran Kareem dealt with Thai issue when it addressed Muslims, as well as local Jews and Christians, during the dispute that arise when the prayer direction was was changed from Jerusalem to the Kabah in Makkah:

" It is not righteousness that you turn your faces towards the east or the west, but righteous is he who believes in Allah SWT and the last day of judgement and the Angels and the books and the prophets, and gives his beloved money to the relatives and the orphans and the needy andover the ransoming of the captives, and who fulfill their promises when they have made one, and the patient in poverty and affliction and the steadfast in time of war, it is those who are the God- fearing".

The deeds mentioned in the above verses are indications that a person is righteous. But they are only a part of worship. Faith, according to the Prophet Muhammad SAW, is the basis of worship and is made up of sixty and some branches the highest of which is the belief in the oneness of Allah SWT, there is no God but Allah SWT and the lowest in the scale of worship is removing obstacles ana dirt from people's way".
Honest work is considered a type of worship. The Prophet Muhammad SAW said: " Whoever finds himself at the  nightfall tires of his work, God will forgive his sins ". Seeking knowledge is one of the highest type of worship. The Prophet Muhammad SAW told his companions that " seeking knowledge is a religious duty on every Muslim. He also said: "Seeking knowledge for one hour is better than praying fir seventy years. " Social courtesy and cooperation when done for the sake of Allah SWT, are also a part of worship. " Receiving your friend with a smile, is a type of charity, helping a person to load his animal is a Charity, and putting some water in your neighbor's bucket is a Charity ".
In Islam, the performing one's duties is also considered an act of worship. The Prophet Muhammad SAW told us that whatever one spends for his family will be counted as an act of worship for which he will be rewarded, provided that he has acquired it through Islamically acceptable means. Kindness to family members, no matter how, are considered acts of worship as long as they are performed in accordance with the relevant Quranic and prophetic guidelines.

It is clear from the previous discussion that the concept of worship in Islam is a comprehensive concept that includes all of the positive activities engaged in by an individual. This is in agreement with the All- inclusive nature of the Islam, which regulates life on the individual, social, economic, political spiritual and all other levels of one's life. This minute attention to one's life. This minute attention to one's activities is the reason why the Quran Kareem and the example and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad SAW deal with all aspects of an individual's and society's life. As following these guidelines is an act of obedience to Allah SWT. He considers them as act of worship. This very positive attitude encourages individuals to follow the relevant guidelines and thus to bring about personal and social transformation. It also causes an individual to internalize the guidelines, for even if no one is watching him, he knows that Allah SWT is watching him.

Discussing non- ritualistic types of worship first fire not mean that the ritualistic ones have less importance. In fact if the letter are performed correctly and sincerely the elevate the individual both spiritually and morally and actually help him to live a righteous life according to the guidance of Allah SWT.
Islam has several  ritualistic activities that all Muslims are expected to perform. The most important one is the prayer which must be performed according to a specific style. It's importance derives from the fact that it serves as the distinctive trait of a Muslim and because it prevents a Muslim from engaging in sinful activities by putting him.into direct contact with Allah SWT five times a day. Thus, the ritual prayer is a chance to him a renew his covenant with Allah SWT and so seek his guidance. Anew. As it says in the Quran Kareem: You alone do we Worship and to you alone do we Worship and to you alone do we turn for help. Guide us to the straight path . Actually, the ritual prayer is the first practical manifestation of the Islamic faith and is the main condition for a Muslim's success. Successful indeed are the believers who are humble in their prayers.

This has also been emphasized by the Prophet Muhammad SAW, who said: " Those who offer their prayer with great care and punctuality will find it a light, a proof of their faith and a cause of their salvation on the day of judgement".
The second most important pillar of Islam is Zakat, a term that signifies giving to the less fortunate a certain percentage of one's earnings and holdings. Giving the poor due and performing the prayer are usually mentioned together in the Quran Kareem, for they are both visible manifestation of one's Islamic faith and belief that Allah SWT is the sole owner of everything in the universe, which he allows man to enjoy as his trustee for a specific period of time: believe in Allah SWT and Gus Messenger and spend of that over which he made you trustee. In this respect, giving one's poor due is an act of devotion that, like prayer , brings the believer never to his Lord.

In addition  this act provides a means to redistribute a society's wealth in a way that reduces difference between classes and groups. It makes an important contribution to social stability, for by purging the .soul of the rich person from selfishness and the soul of the poor from envy and resentment against society. It blocks the channels leading to class hatred and makes it possible for the springs of brotherhood and solidarity to gush forth. Such stability is not merely based on the personal feelings of the rich: it stands on a firmly establish right that, if denied by the rich, would be according to God's great bounty.
The month long fast of Ramadan is the third pillar of Islam. It's main function is to make tha Muslim pure from " within", just as the external legal code makes his external action pure. This process of purification makes it possible fir him to respond to what is true and good and to shun what is false and evil. As stated in the Quran Kareem: " O you who Believe, fasting is prescribed for those before you, that you may gain piety.

Fasting then, awakens an individual's conscience and gives it scope for exercise in a communal experience that is engaged in by the entire Muslim world at the same time. Such a ritual strengthens the individuals resolve to improve himself and to realize the  purpose of the whole undertaking. Fasting offers a compulsory rest to the over worked human body for the duration of one full month, and also reminds Muslims of those who are deprived of life's necessities throughout the year or throughout one's life. It makes him realize the suffering of his less fortunate Muslim brothers, a feeling that promotes in him a sense of sympathy and kindness towards Muslims and other people in general .

Lastly, we come to the annual pilgrimage to the house of Allah in Makkah. This ritual, known as the Hajj is unique to Islam.
Muslims from all corner of the world and All attired in the same clothing respond in one voice and one language with the following phrase upon entering the sacred precinct: لبیک اللہم لبیک here I am at your service. This is a time of strick self discipline and control where not only sacred things are reserved. But even the life of a plants and birds is made inviolable. And he that venerates th sacred things of God. It shall be better for him with his lord as well as that venerates the way marks of God. It surely is from devotion of the heart.

Pilgrimage gives an opportunity for all Muslims, regardless of their affiliations with certain groups, classes, organizations, and governments, to meet annually in a great congress. The time and venue of this Congress has been set by God. All Muslims are invited to attend, for no individual or government can deny any Muslim the right to do so. Every Muslim who attends us guaranteed full safety and freedom as long he does not violate it's sanctity.
Thus, worship in Islam, whether ritual or non- ritual trains, the individual in such a way that he moves hua creative even more, which. Causes him to gain an unyielding will and spins to wipe out all evil and oppression from his society and to make the word id God triumphant.

The Nature of worship in Islam:

The purpose of Man's creation:

Know that Allah's SWT created man for hua worship.
Thus, Allah's SWT States in the noble Quran Kareem:

" I have not created Jin and humankind but to worship me".

Meaning, I creates Jin and man only for one purpose, which is my worship. The original purpose of Man's life and the original purpose of his coming into this world is that he Worships Allah SWT.

Are not angel sufficient for worship:

If this question arises in one's mind that Allah SWT had already created angels previously for this purpose, so what need is there not to create another creation, meaning mankind? The answer to this is that although Angels were created for the purpose of worship, they were created in such a fashion that by their nature they were compelled to worship, because only the substance of worship was placed in their inmate natures. Besides worship, the substance of sin, disobedience and rebellion were not placed in them. However, humankind were created in such a fashion that the substance of disobedience was also placed within them, the substance of sin was also placed within them, and therefore, they were given the command to worship. This is why it is easy fir angels to worship. But within people there are desires, emotions, temptations and needs, and incitements to din, and after this they were given the command to save themselves from those inclinations to sin and to control those urges and suppress those desires and worship Allah SWT.

Two types of worship:

Here, another matter ought to be understood, because of not understanding which, people are often led astray. That is from one perspective it can be said that every act of a believer is worship. Meaning, if the intention of the believer is correct, and his methods are correct, and he passes his life in accordance with the Sunnah, then his eating will also be worship, his to - ING and fro- ING will also be worship, his work will also be worship, his playfulness with his wife and children will also be worship. Now, the question arises that in the same way that all these acts are worship for a believer, Salah is equally worship, so what then us the distinction between these two types of worship. The difference between those two types of worship should be understood well, and because of not understanding this difference, some people have been led astray.

The first type: Intrinsic worship:

The difference between those two types of worship is that one category of actions are those that are intrinsically worship, and have no other purpose besides servitude to Allah SWT like Salah. The purpose of Salah is only servitude to Allah SWT and bows his head before Allah SWT. This Salah has ni other purpose or objective. This is why Salah is original and intrinsic worship. The same is the case with fasting Zakat, zikr, recitation, supplications,Hajj and Umrah. All these actions are such that they were all instituted only for the purpose of worship, and thru have no other objective or purpose. These are categorized as " intrinsic worship".

The second day: Extrinsic worship:

In contrast to them are some activities which originally have another purpose like fulfilling worldly needs and desires. But Allah SWT, by his grace said to the believer that if you fulfil your worldly activities with a good intention, within my prescribed limits, and in accordance with the Sunnah of my Noble Prophet Muhammad SAW, then I will give you such reward for those acta what I give to the first category. This is why these are not Intrinsic worship , but are extrinsic worship. This is the second category of worship.

Halal earning is extrinsic worship:

For example, if in order to fulfill the rights of one's wife and children, while staying Within the limited boundaries, you earn it with the intention that my wife's rights are from my responsibilities and my children's rights are from my responsibilities and my body's rights from my responsibilities and in order to fulfill these rights, i am earning living then this earning will also become worship of Allah SWT. However, earning a living was not originally instituted for worship, which is why it is not Intrinsic worship, but extrinsic.

Intrinsic worship is superior:

By this explanation is understood that those types of worship that are intrinsic worship are manifestly superior to that worship which is extrinsically worship, and it has a higher rank. This is why, that which is intrinsic worship. The second category of worship, that is extrinsic worship, is not intended.

The incident of a doctor:

Some days ago, a woman asked me about her husband who is a doctor.
He said He keeps his clinic open and sees his patients, and even the time of Salah comes, he does not offer Salah at its time, and when he closes the clinic at night and returns home,he prays three Salahs at one time, once you have come home and why do not pray there in the clinic so you do not have to make them up? In response, the husband said that the treatment I give to patients is work in service of Creation is a great act of worship, and it relates to the rights of slaves, which is why I give it preference, and since offering Salah is my personal affair, this is why I pray them all at once when I reach home.

Salah is not forgiven in any circumstance:

In reality, her husband has a faculty understanding here because of not appreciating the difference in the grades that exists between the two types of worship. This difference is that the worship off Salah is intrinsic, regarding which Allah stated that even if you are in the battlefield, and the enemy is facing you, even then you must pray. Although some ease has been created in the method of Salah in such a circumstance yet the obligation of Salah at this time is not waived. Thus, Allah SWT has decreed the following verdict with respect to Salah: " Surely, Salah is an obligation on the believers st fixed times."

Service of Creation is worship of the second category:

Such that even if a person was to have fallen I'll, and was so ill, that he is unable to perform any action, even in this situation, his ruling us that he must not leave Salah, but some allowance has been given that if you are unable to pray standing you can pray sitting, you can pray sitting, and if you are unable to perform Wudu, do Tayamum but you must certainly pray.
Salah has not been forgiven in any circumstance because salah is intrinsic worship that is desired in itself, and is worship of the first rank. The treatment the doctor offers his patients is service of creation which is also a great act of worship, not intrinsic worship. This is why if there is any disparity or opposition between Two types of worship, then in such a situation, that worship will be given priority. Because the doctor did not recognize this Distinction between the two types of worship, he was as a consequence, afflicted by this error .

In comparison to other needs Salah is more important:

Ponder! When you are sitting in the clinic to serve creation, at this time you have to get up fir other needs, like if there is a need to go the lavatory or to take a bath, in such a circumstance you will eventually leave the patients and go.
In reality, because of not understanding the difference between the two Types of worship, this misunderstanding was created. Although in terms of the second category of worship, a believer can make all his acts worship, as if q believer were to work with a good intention and in accordance with the Sunnah, his entire life would be worship but this is worship of the second rank. Worship of the first rank. Salah, fasting, Hajj Zakat zikr of Allah SWT are intrinsic worship of Allah SWT and in actual fact mankind was created for this worship.

Mankind us being tested:

Mankind was created for such worship in order to see that if the human being, in whom have placed hun inclinations and attractions towards sins, despite all of this, will this human being come towards me and remember me, or will he gi in the direction of the invitations to sin and will those urges overcome him, it was for this purpose that mankind was created.
  1. Allama Shabbir Ahmed al- Uthmani wrote in his commentary of Sahih Muslim:                                                           " Indeed the single purpose of the creation of existence with all it's constituents parts is worship alone. All that is besides this is only incorporated within this foundations, preliminaries supplements and consequences. For indeed Allah SWT he only created the heavens and earth and all that us between them for mankind, and he did not crate them but for worship. Thus, the material world was on my created for us, and we were created for the next world and Worship.                                                                                                       " As for the first statement, many texts announce it. He said: " he created for you all that the earth contains; then he turned to the heavens and made them seven skies".and He said: " Allah SWT has subjugated for you what is in the heavens and what is on the earth' and besides these from uncountable and innumerable clear statement.                                                                                            " As for the second statement, the clear text , I have not created Jin and humankind but to worship me, articulates it".                                                                                                                          " And indeed Allah SWT combine both meanings in one verse where he said: " O people! Worship your lord who creates you and those before you, so that you may become vigilant. He is the one who made th earth a bed for you, and the sky a roof, and sent down water from the sky, then brought forth with it fruits, as a provision for you. So do not set up parallels to Allah when you know.".                                                                                                                             " And the verifiers of this  subject - as th  likes of the   teacher - strengthened it with proofs and arguments, ana produced detailed explanations, so that argumentation and dispute will not reach to it".
  2. Worship literally refers to the first category or " intrinsic worship ", while if is used  for the second category or " extrinsic  worship " only metaphorically. Mawlana Zakariya Kandehlewi explains this in his polemic against syed Abu Alw Mqwdudi as follows:                                                             " Even the most substandard student of Hadith will certainly be aware of the distinction, that ibadat and muamalar are two sperate things. The books of Hadith and fiqh from beginning to end, in their entirely, are full that worship and worldly dealings are two sperate entries. It is another matter than if in worldly dealings the boundaries of Allah SWT is kept in view they will bring reward just like worship. And certainly will be acquired. And because of this reward in some texts they are called worship as a metaphor. Merely because reward will be attained bt means of them, will they nie be included Within the meaning of worship, or is it just as the Messenger said: one who prepares a fighter in the path of Allah SWT, he has fought and one who takes responsibility for a fighter over his family.                                                                                                           " Allamah Munawi wrote: "Worship is the utmost if submission, and it is used in the Shariah for that which has been designated as a symbol of the peak of submission, like Salah and fasting.".                                                                                  " I will now turn attention to a few Hadiths by way of example. It was narrated from Ata :i said to Hazrat Aisha : inform me of the most amazing thing that you saw from the messenger of Allah SWT . She said: " All of his affairs were amazing. He came to me at night, and he entered with me under my blanket, and then he said: * leave me, so I can worship my Lord," and then he got up, performed wudu and he stood and offered Salah. The two shiekh transmitted from Anas that he said: three people came to the houses of the wives of the Prophet Muhammad SAW inquiring about the worship of the prophet Muhammad and when they were informed it was as though they deemed it less.
