Gratitude ( Shukr) to Allah SWT:
Gratitude to Allah SWT means recognizing that all blessings come from him. It brings peace to the heart, fulfills a core purpose of faith, and promises an increase in his favour.
Ways to practice gratitude:
By hearts:
Acknowledge that every good thing in your life is a gift from Allah SWT.
By tongue:
Alhamdulillah often and thank the people who help you.
By action:
Use your health, time and wealth to do good deeds and help others.
A short reflection:
" O Allah SWT, thank you for the breathe in my lungs, the faith in my heart, and the quiet moments of peace. Forgive my shortcomings, and help me use your countless gifts to please You. Keep my heart humble and always turned toward your grace".
Show gratitude in Islam:
In Islam, showing gratitude to Allah SWT - known as shukr- is expressed through three main areas; the heart, the tongue. Acknowledging that all blessings come purely from his leads to inner peace, spiritual growth and an increase in divine favor.
Gratitude in the heart:
Acknowledge the source:
Deeply realize that every good thing- health, faith, nutrition and life itself - is a direct gift from Allah SWT.
Reflect on blessings:
Regularly think about hidden and visible favors, such as sight, hearing and safety which are easy to take fir granted.
Accept his decree:
Maintain contentment and patience during hard times, Knowing that even difficulties serve a purpose and repent for Sins.
Gratitude with the tongue:
Say Alhamdulillah:
Often praise Allah SWT by saying Alhamdulillah in times of both comfort and trial.
Thank people:
Acknowledge human kindness, as the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad SAW taught that whoever does not thank people has not truly thanked Allah SWT.
Gratitude Through action:
Obey his commands:
Fulfill religious duties like the five daily prayers, fasting and giving charity.
Share with others:
Give charity and use your health, wealth and skills to help people and benefit society.
Make prostration of thanks:
Perform Sajud ash- Shukr when receiving good news or escaping a hardship.
Ways to show gratitude:
If is Allah SWT who has created us, made us an intelligent species, and favoured us with many blessings. Whatever good we achieve - Whether relaying to material, professional, personal or spiritual life- is ultimately from Allah SWT. As he states in the Quran Kareem:
" And he gave you from all you asked of him. And if you should count the favours of Allah SWT, you could not specify them. Indeed, humankind is most unjust and ungrateful".
The above ayah emphasize the need for frequently expressing gratitude to Allah SWT. However, many of us are unaware of how exactly to do so- what constitutes gratitude and what does not.
1. Contemporary his blessings in your life:
Begin by reflecting upon all that is worthwhile in your life. Recount all the good things things in your mind or jot them down- including your relationships, abilities possessions , and achievements. If you are not consciously aware of what there is to be thankful for , then you simply cannot be thankful for it. These scenarios, disconcerting as they may seem, allow you to appreciate your situation in life, and not take things for granted.
2. Be content at heart:
Do not yearn for what others have; rather, br content with what you can acquire, without overworking yourself on stamping upon someone else to get there. If you constantly compare your financial status or perceived well being with anyone else, you are not going to achieve peace of mind, these is no contentment of heart. So when you see someone someone living in luxury of doing great in life, just be happy for them instead of feeling envious. Try to give your best at everything, and know that whatever befalls you is by the will of Allah SWT.
3. Express gratitude with words:
Call upon Allah SWT each day to express how grateful you are for his favours. Begin your daily supplication of gratitude with yh words. " O Allah SWT, I'm thankful to you for giving me all these blessings", and then recount them individually - as many as you can.
4. Obey the commands of Allah SWT:
Obedience to the commands of Allah SWT is the most practical form of gratitude. By obeying Allah SWT, you are acknowledging his supremacy over you, and his many favours upon you. Therefore, make every effort to enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong. Aspire for the truth even if goes against you or those close to you. On the other hand, placing your personal interests above the commands of Allah SWT is pure ingratitude which hampers your spiritual growth.
5. Thank people who do good to you:
Express gratitude to any person who does something for you-no matter how small. Do not dismiss any kind word or deed as insignificant, and make it a point to acknowledge the person who is there for you. Ingratitude to people is equivalent to ingratitude towards Allah SWT, as the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad SAW said,
" He who does not thank people is not thankful to Allah SWT".
6. Share your blessings with others:
Everything that you possess ultimately belongs to Allah SWT, you are merely its guardians and beneficiary for a period of time. It thus makes sense to share your blessings with fellow humans. Allah Paak describes helping those in need as giving Allah SWT a " goodly loan" which he shall repay many times over. The more you share something with others that you love, the higher your level of gratitude towards Allah Paak.
7. Do not waste your blessings:
Wasting food, water and other resources is a sign of indifference towards Allah's blessings. The Prophet Hazrat Muhammad SAW used to urge people to " clean the dish" while eating and do not to leave any particle of food behind. Millions of people around the world are deprived of basic necessities such as regular meals and clean water. Hence, any food that goes to your bin, rather than to someone who needs it, is contributing to starvation and poverty. On the other hand, if you value the blessings at your disposal, and minimize wastage, you are not only being grateful for them but also contributing to hunger and poverty. On the other hand, if you value the blessings at your disposal and minimize wastage, you are not only being grateful for them but also contributing to a more equitable distribution of resources.
8. Exercise patience in difficult times:
As Prophet Yaqub said,
" Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allah SWT except the disbelieving people".
Learn and grow through the difficulties you encounter and remember that no hardship lasts forever. Impatience in a tough situations is a sign of weak faith and short - sightedness. It does nothing to alleviate the suffering, but only leads to more frustration.
9. Remain committed in times of ease:
In good times, it is easy to imagine that nothin can go wrong, one may end up neglecting the remembrance of Allah SWT, and becoming absorbed into worldly life. The Quran Kareem gives the examples of a group of sailors whose ship is surrounded by a storm in the ocean. They call our to Allah SWT alone for help, but once he rescues them and brings them safely to coast , they start associating partners with him. In the same way, we often promise to reform ourselves if a certain attempt is prevented from us, but once we are safely delivered from it, we return to sinful conduct. It is important to remain thankful to Allah SWT and conscious of his commands at all times, not just when it is convenient to do so.
Ways of expressing gratitude, from the Quran and Sunnah:
One of the goals of Ramadan is developing a sense of gratitude towards Allah SWT is exalted as he said,
The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Quran Kareem- Allah SWT intends for you ease and does not hardship and wants for you to complete the period and glorify Allah SWT for that which he has guided you, And perhaps you will be grateful.
Gratitude of the tongue:
Allah paak said in the Quran Kareem,
And proclaim the grace of your Lord.
We can express gratitude by saying Alhamdulillah. In fact, that is what we say at the start of the every prayer, and it is highly recommended zikr, to be said after prayers, after anything good happens to you, even after sneezing. It was reported that messenger said,
What you mention of glory of Allah SWT, of Tasbih and Tahmid revolves around the throne, buzzing like bees, reminding of the one who said it.
Gratitude of the Heart:
This is the amazing emotion that fills your heart when realizing the blessings of Allah SWT on you.
Gratitude of the of limbs:
Whenever Allah SWT mentions belief in Quran Kareem, he usually mentions good deeds right after it. For example,
But they who believe ana do righteous deeds those are the companions of Paradise; they abide therein eternally.
Allah paak has promised those who believe and do righteous deeds for them there is forgiveness and great reward.
Gratitude of the limbs entails showing Allah SWT was gratefulness through obeying him with your actions. It is the proof of gratefulness of the heart and the tongue that you actually do the things which he commanded you to do.
Showing gratitude to others:
The Prophet Hazrat Muhammad SAW said,
Whoever is not grateful to the people, he is not grateful to Allah SWT.
Even Hazrat Musa (AS) acknowledged the favours of Firaun, the great criminal.
Making good use of Allah's SWT favours:
We show gratitude to Allah SWT by using the favours He bestowed on us in a way that pleases him. We acknowledge the blessing of our health and time by worshipping Allah SWT. We shower gratitude for the laptops and gadgets he has given us by using it to spread dawah. We show gratitude for the wealth he has provided us with by spending it in charity.
Benefits of Gratitude:
1. Safety from the Hellfire:
Ingratitude is one of the qualities of the disbelievers. In fact, Allah SWT uses the same word for disbelief as for ingratitude:
And when your Lord declared , if you are grateful, I will surely increase you ; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe'.
2 .Huge reward of Allah SWT:
Allah paak said in the several times:
Thus do we reward he who is grateful.
Allah paak will reward the grateful.
And we will reward the grateful.
The Prophet Hazrat Muhammad SAW said,
A grateful eater will have a reward like that of a patient fasting person.
3. Feeling of happiness and contentment:
Research in positive psychology has revealed that one of the most effective ways of attaining happiness is to express gratitude. It makes sense because when you are grateful, you are focusing on the positive aspects of your life rather than the negative, which automatically makes you happy and content.
4. Increase in blessings:
Allah SWT promised that if we are grateful, then he will increase us. He did not put a limit of what exactly he will increase us in, because his bounties are limitless. So if you have just had some delicious ice cream and say Alhamdulillah, Allah SWT will give you more ice cream, or perhaps he will give you something better than ice cream, for example Taqwa.

Kareem, a 40 years old IT professional, feels a crushing sense of bitterness. He is successful in his career, does not have any health problems, and his income puts him in the top 1% of US household income $350,000 and above). He even has healthy kids and supportive wife, yet somehow, life just feels like it's not what he had in mind. He might have everything in the world to some people, but he simply cannot find that contentment he is so desperately looking for.
Being grateful for what we have benefits us in so many more ways than we can imagine. And the data proves it. Research studies have demonstrated how a sense of gratitude is associated with increased well- being physical health, and reduced desire cod material gains. Given how life changing gratitude can be in regard to our well being, one might think that it would be readily practiced. Shockingly, however one poll found that only roughly half of Americans regularly express gratitude ( 52% of women and 44% of men). And even when people agreed that gratitude is important (~90% of respondents), only about half of those individuals (~50% of respondents) admitted to regularly expressing it to family, friends and colleagues. The classic sentiment, " I think it's very important, but I don't do it, appears to be common when it comes to gratitude.
This emotions also holds true for the Muslim also holds true for the Muslim community. However, we have a responsibility to understand the centrality of gratitude in our religion. Our faith provide us with the answer as to why Allah SWT expects gratitude from us and more importantly, why he is so deserving of our praise. So let's take a deep dive into the role of gratitude in the Muslim tradition, which is often captured by the Arabic work shukr, when used in an Islamic context, the meaning of shukr extends well beyond general ideas of gratitude and thankfulness as they are used in contemporary society. Embodying shukr in it's fullest sense is, in fact a way of life the cultivates endless worldly and otherworldly rewards. The Quran and Sunnah are replete with remainders to express shukr. Ibn al- Qayyim went as far for saying that half of our entire belief rests on practicing it.
